what is beta?

i am out of the loop but cn i ask a question without getting crapped all over? what is a beta version of a game and how do i get it. how do i get CoD:WaW beta? i her about everyone playing it. just wondering.what is beta?
99.9% of Betas you must apply for or be a member of a certain site or sometimes pre-order. Call of Duty World at War was all of those but now everyone is playing WaW because Treyarch made the Beta public to everyone and it is available on the marketplace right now. This has never happaned as far as I know but yeah the WaW Beta is on the marketplace now. Which totally defeats the purpose of me getting it 2 weeks ago from being a member of charlieoscardelta.com before it shut down.what is beta?
You have to also know of it ahead of time to register since it's a first come first serve thing with them in some cases. The COD5 beta ends in two days, it's already been out for about a month.

Basically a beta is sort of like the testing phase, it's the same game that will come out on the release date but without as much polish (usually). There's really no point in getting the beta of a game unless your really excited and can't wait for release. Most of the time during a beta they usually delete all the progress everyone has made so those that didn't get chosen for beta and those that did can have a clean start. Hope this helps.
A BETA is actually a game that is a few months from being released into the public. Its supposed to be a time for a select few to play it and send in their pros and cons ''bugs/glitches'' and give the developers time to retool.BUT...It seems to me that most ''BETAS'' are more finished demos then betas. Most every beta I have been a part of comes out just month or so before the game is to be released. That does not give the test subjects enough time to play and report bugs. So to me most ''BETAS'' are improperly named and should be named what they really are.....DEMOS
BETA's are like pre game testing demo's, that sometimes people have access to playing before the final copy.
yeah beta is just the term for the final testing phase of a game but yeah most of the time they are like 99.0% the same as the final retail version is gonna be only thing that might change is some bugs if they have time.
